  • Kirtan – ‘Satyam Bol’

    Satyam-Bol-(track-one)

“Play your kirtan, Tantramurti,” invited Guruji . . .

So, of course, my mind immediately went blank!

In commemoration of, and in dedication to, my guru Paramahansa Satyananda, I offer this short compositional extract written on 14th June 1985.  A few days later, after trialling it at the Satyananda Yoga Centre, London, I attended Guru Poornima Day celebrations at the Greek ashram, I queued once to receive the tilak from Guruji.  I queued a second time to offer the manuscript of the ‘Yoga Education for Children’ book and, as I turned to go, Guruji indicated for me sit by his side with the kirtanists.   When everyone had offered their gifts and pranams and the circle had once again been formed Guruji invited me to lead my new kirtan.  Unprepared, my mind went blank for a few seconds as the videos purred and an expectant crowd waited patiently for the first outing of ‘Satyam Bol’.  When everyone realised that Guruji, rather unusually, had sanctioned the singing of a Satyananda kirtan, the place went crackers and, as I turned to look at my Guru, that connection was forever.

I have a number of other original compositions if anyone would be interested in working with me to produce something of ‘old school’ kirtans.  I am also preparing an acapella ‘taal’ based album as an experiment.  I’ve always released kirtans’ into the wild’, as it were, knowing they were perfectly capabale of looking after themselves.  I hope to encourage my fellow lovers of kirtan, if you enjoy it, to share ‘Satyam Bol’ with your gurubai, friends and students and allow the song to do its magic.

    Satyam Bol Songbook (cover)

I’m currently working on this kirtan songbook after collecting and recording kirtans from around the world, with the SYC, London band ‘Satsang’ and by meditative compositions.
